With training camp just over a month away, a report in the USA Today on Friday says that the Maple Leafs expect forward Matthew Lombardi to be at training camp.

Luke Schenn is going behind the bench to try his hand at coaching … for one game anyway.

Schenn is one of the celebrity coaches at the first annual Allstate All-Canadians game that will be taking place Saturday at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga.

Schenn was on the ice Thursday afternoon with his team as 42 of the top Bantam-aged players from across Canada will faceoff this weekend. Schenn’s coaching opponent  will be Ottawa Senators forward Jason Spezza.

“The coaching career is starting earlier than anticipated but it’s going to be a lot of fun,” Schenn said with a big laugh.

What will be the key to the game?

“It will come down to coaching but I have a better staff than Spezza,” Schenn said.

All kidding aside, Schenn realizes that this camp is a great opportunity for the youngsters to learn from many current and former NHL players.

Air Canada Centre was the stage for about 50 people on Wednesday looking to become the next in arena-host for the Toronto Maple Leafs. The eventual winner will have some big shoes to fill taking over for Monika Platek who will be moving on to work for the CTV Olympic consortium.

“Monika set the bar high and she did a great job and we’ve had a lot of success with our announcers,” said Mike Ferriman, Manager of Game Operations.

The process on Wednesday began at 1 p.m. and involved the hopefuls reading a few promotions and also having to interview “Doug Gilmour” with Ferriman and other game-crew members looking on to judge the best candidate possible.

After their initial run through Wednesday Ferriman was still unsure if there would be a callback for a few of the finalists or if he would make his decision based on their one performance.
