Late goal sinks Leafs in home opener

TORONTO (Ticker) -- Petr Schastlivy made Travis Green and the Toronto Maple Leafs pay.

Schastlivy scored a power-play goal with 21.2 seconds remaining as the Ottawa Senators continued their regular-season mastery of the Maple Leafs with a 2-1 victory in the latest renewal of the Battle of Ontario.

With overtime looming, Green took a roughing penalty on Senators defenseman Curtis Leschyshyn with 30 seconds remaining.

"It was full speed," Green explained. "I was coming full speed and he tried to move at the last second, and I tried to get him and I think my arm came up a bit. If I could do it over again, I wouldn't have done it."

Moments later, a clearing attempt by Toronto defenseman Jyrki Lumme popped into the air and came to Schastlivy in the left faceoff circle. The 23-year-old Russian turned and beat goaltender Trevor Kidd for his sixth NHL goal and first since December 9, 2000.

"I'm very excited," said Schastlivy, who missed most of last season following reconstructive knee surgery. "I have not played in a long time. Eight months after the injury, to score a goal in the second game of the season, it's good for me."

Moments before Green's penalty, Ottawa captain Daniel Alfredsson backchecked and tied up Alexander Mogilny, who had a step on the Senators' defense.

"Mogilny kind of had a 2-on-1 and I was able to get back and get a stick in between him," Alfredsson said.

Ottawa was able to hold on and got 22 saves from Patrick Lalime to improve to 13-3-1 against the Maple Leafs since April 1999.

Toronto, however, has eliminated the Senators from the playoffs each of the last three years.

"It's a good rivalry," Alfredsson said. "It's been building up for the last six or seven years."

Kidd made 33 saves in place of Ed Belfour, who recorded a shutout in a season-opening victory at Pittsburgh but sat out the home opener with an infected finger.

"Kidder was awesome," Green said. "He played great tonight. I feel bad, but obviously, we lost for him."

Toronto struck first during a two-man advantage 14:09 into the first period. Defenseman Robert Svehla passed from the top of the right circle to Jonas Hoglund, who made a one-touch feed into the slot, setting up Tie Domi's first goal of the season.

But it was the only puck that got past Lalime, who stopped 22 shots in his 200th NHL game and improved to 9-2 lifetime against Toronto.

Mogilny had chances early but was stopped on a breakaway and was denied by Lalime from the right doorstep.

Kidd preserved the lead with an acrobatic stop on Radek Bonk off a 3-on-1 late in the opening period, then foiled Todd White on a partial breakaway less than two minutes later.

"He played unbelievable," Alfredsson said. "Both teams went back and forth, there were a lot of power plays for both teams and both teams played unbelievable."

Ottawa tied it on the power play with 3:33 to go in the second period. Bonk had the puck at the bottom of the right circle and passed back to Marian Hossa, who beat Kidd from the right circle.

The Senators had chances to go ahead in the third period, but Kidd denied Mike Fisher on a breakaway and made a lunging glove stop on Martin Havlat's power-play deflection.
