Maple Leafs Re-sign Gary Roberts
Pat Quinn, general manager and head coach, announced Tuesday that the Toronto Maple Leafs have re-signed forward Gary Roberts to a contract. In keeping with club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Roberts, 36, made his season debut versus Ottawa Saturday night after missing the first 57 games recovering from surgery on both shoulders during the offseason.

Last season, he finished fourth on the team in goals (21) and registered the only Leafs hat trick December 6, 2001 at the New York Rangers. Roberts finished third in the 2002 NHL playoffs in points (19-tie) and fourth in assists (12). He led the team during the postseason in assists, points, powerplay goals (3), powerplay points (8), multiple point games (6) and multiple assist games (3-tie). He currently ranks 25th on the Maple Leafs all-time playoff points list.

The native of North York, Ontario is one of only six players in NHL history to score 350 goals and amass 2000 penalty minutes (Mike Foligno, Brendan Shanahan, Rick Tocchet, Pat Verbeek and Kevin Dineen).

He has participated in the NHL All-Star Game on two occasions (1992, 1993) and won the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey in 1996. Roberts best season game during the 1991-92 campaign with the Flames when he scored 53 goals and 37 assists for 90 points.

He has scored 20 or more goals in a season 11 times over his 16 year career with Calgary, Carolina and Toronto. In 944 career NHL games he has collected 750 points (364 goals, 386 assists) with 2251 penalty minutes.

Roberts was signed as an unrestricted free agent by Toronto July 4, 2000. He was originally Calgary?s first choice, 12th overall in the 1984 Entry Draft.
