Maple Leafs Obtain Former Captain

Pat Quinn, general manager and head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced Tuesday that the hockey club has obtained former Maple Leaf captain Doug Gilmour from the Montreal Canadiens.

"You have a good bunch of character guys here puzzled together and I'm just hoping to be a piece of that puzzle," said Gilmour via confernence call Tuesday. "I can honestly say it's pretty exciting right now."

In exchange, the Canadiens will receive Toronto's sixth-round draft choice in the 2003 Entry Draft.

Gilmour, 39, has 11 goals and 19 assists to go along with 36 penalty minutes in 61 games with the Canadiens this season.

Playing in his 20th National Hockey League season, the native of Kingston, Ontario has recorded 450 goals and 964 assists for 1,414 points in 1473 career games. Gilmour is the Maple Leafs' all-time playoffs leader with 77 points and 60 assists and he served as team captain from 1994 until his trade from the team February 25, 1997.

The centreman holds Maple Leaf club records for most assists and points in one season (95 and 127 respectively in 1992-93). He sits 14th on the Maple Leafs all-time points list with 452 in 392 regular season games in the Blue and White.
