\"Ask A Leaf\" With Ed Belfour
Welcome to a "Ask a Leaf" on mapleleafs.com where you can ask a question of a member of the Maple Leafs each week and see selected answers posted here. You will also be able to see the answers on FanCam, one of the more popular shows on Leafs TV.

Recently, we had the chance to do a Q+A with Maple Leafs' netminder Ed Belfour.

Q: Who is your hockey hero growing up, and why did you chouse goaltending?

Ed: "Tony Esposito was my favorite hockey player, that's one of the biggest reasons I chose to be a goalie."

Q: How would you describe your work ethic as goaltender?

Ed: "I try to work hard and intense, and be focused."

Q: How would you describe your style of play as a goaltender?

Ed: "I don't know if I have any one technique. I try to stop the puck as much as possible using techniques such as, butterflies, stand up, and scramble. Whatever it takes to try to get a piece of it."

Belfour was dealing with a lot of traffic against the Flyers.

Q: How good does it feel to have so many shutouts for the Leafs?

Ed: "It definitely is a good feeling, if the teams playing hard in front of you, the game is intense, and there is a 1-0 shutout it's always the best feeling."

Q: How does it feel when the puck goes through the net?

Ed: "It's never a good feeling. You feel shame. You're angry at first, but you have to try to let it go. You have to focus on the rest of the game."

Q: What made you want to play with the Leafs?

Ed: "Well it was an Original Six team and I wanted to play in Canada for sure. They wanted me, so it was definitely a good feeling."

Q: How does it feel to be loved by so many Fans?

Ed: "To know the fans are behind you is a great feeling, and it boosts your confidence."

Q: How do you prepare for game, Any rituals?

Ed: "No I'm not really superstitious. I try to do the same thing to prepare the same way for every game. I stretch in the morning as well as throughout the day. I put the equipment on the same way, and try to have the same warm-up. I always hope it leads to a good game."

Q: Why do they call you Eddie the Eagle?

Ed: "It started when I had my first goalie mask made with the Eagles on it and Mike Keenan started calling me Eddie the Eagle."

Q: Does that reflect the way you are, and your personality on the ice?

Ed: "Yes, eagles have good vision, good focus. The eagle is a little bit of a loner, which most goaltenders are; it goes along with the job, I guess."

Q: What kind of message do you hope to give to younger kids who would like to be goaltender like you?

Ed: "Have fun, work hard, and never give up."
