Sundin Heading To Worlds
Turku, Finland (CP) -- Toronto Maple Leafs star Mats Sundin will play for Sweden at the world hockey championships but he won't join the team until next week.

Sweden's first game is against Latvia on Saturday but Sundin, along with Colorado star Peter Forsberg, aren't expected to be available until at least Tuesday when the Swedes face Canada.

Sundin must first undergo more dental surgery to repair damage caused by an errant puck during a game in early April.

"My decision will be official after I get my dental work done on Friday," Sundin told the Swedish newspaper Expressen. "But there's nothing that will keep me from taking part in the tournament."

Sundin and the Leafs were eliminated from the first round of the NHL playoffs after a Game 7 loss to the Flyers in Philadelphia on Tuesday. Sundin brings the total number of Leafs playing at the world championship to seven.

His decision may not sit well with Leafs tough guy Tie Domi. Following the 6-1 loss Tuesday, Domi seemed unhappy that some of his teammates were planning to play in the tournament.

"I hope they all do well but I just can't see how guys can pack up and leave and go and play in a world championships after being embarrassed like we were last night," Domi said Wednesday. "That's definitely an eye-opener for sure."

In addition to Sundin, Toronto's Aki Berg and Jyrki Lumme will play for Finland, Mikael Renberg for Sweden, Robert Reichel for the Czech Republic, Robert Svehla for Slovakia and Phil Housley for the United States.

Sundin, who recorded 37 goals and 35 assists this season, led the Swedes to gold medals at the 1991, '92 and '98 world championships.

Meanwhile, Washington's Peter Bondra was officially added to Slovakia's roster after making a verbal commitment earlier this week.
