Wellwood, 19, led the Ontario Hockey League's Windsor Spitfires with 100 points on 41 goals and 59 assists last season.

Originally drafted by the Maple Leafs in the fifth round, 134th overall, in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, the Windsor, Ontario native recorded five points (one goal, four assists) in six games as a member of Canada's Silver medal winning team at the 2003 World Junior Hockey Championships. Wellwood also led the Spitfires in the post-season, scoring five goals and adding nine assists for 14 points in seven playoff games.

Last season was Wellwood's fourth in the OHL. On April 29, he was awarded the OHL's William Hanley Trophy as the league's most sportsmanlike player.

Wellwood finished the season with a streak of 86 consecutive games without a penalty minute. The former Belleville Bull was previously named to the OHL's Western Conference All-star team in 2001 and 2002. He also won the OHL's 2001 Eddie Powers Trophy by leading the league with 118 points.
