Toronto Maple Leafs
The following is a transcript of a fax sent to the Toronto media by Svehla's agent, Rich Winter and obtained by mapleleafs.com
After consulting with Rich Winter, his agent at The Sports Corporation (TSC) and his family, Robert Svehla has decided to retire permanently from playing hockey. Robert will return to his home in Slovakia to work with the Dukla Trenchin Hockey Team as Vice President/Director responsible for junior player development.
He leaves with many great memories of teammates, coaches, general manager and team personnel in both Toronto and Florida who became friends and his fans that made him feel at home. He would especially like to thank the Toronto Maple Leafs for their support and for their tremendous persistence in trying to convince him to continue to play for one of hockey's greatest organizations.
Robert is currently playing with the Slovakian team at the World Championships in Finland and will be unavailable for comment until the conclusion of the tournament.
