Maple Leafs' backup goalie Trevor Kidd will undergo surgery on his troublesome right shoulder this summer in hopes to have the nagging injury cleared up for the fall.
The procedure and rehab will see "Kidder" miss preseason and possibly some regular season action in 2003-04.
"He's having it cleaned up and we're looking at a four month recovery period," Maple Leafs' assistant to the general manager, Bill Watters, told the Toronto Sun.
In his first season as the Leafs' backup, Kidd posted a record of 6-10-2 with a 3.10 GAA.
Kidd first suffered the injury during the 1999 season when he was with the Florida Panthers. It occurred during the Panthers annual skills competition, Kidd slipped on a puck during the rapid fire drill and missed 6 weeks.
"His shoulder kind of pops in and out," Watters said. "It was thought best to have it checked out now and fixed now instead of it possibly causing problems during the middle of the season."
Kidd's misfortune can be the gain for goaltending prospect Mikael Tellqvist. Tellqvist may also benefit from having training camp in his native Sweden. The young backstop had a strong season with the St. John's Maple Leafs and helped Sweden to the final game in this spring's World Championships.
