Flames Burn Leafs In OT

Vs. Flames: Scoring | Stats

CALGARY (CP) - Steven Reinprecht and Jarome Iginla proved to be a lethal duo for the Calgary Flames on Tuesday night.

The linemates were both in on all of Calgary's goals, including Toni Lydman's game-winner 1:24 into overtime as the Flames beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-2. Reinprecht got the puck from Iginla in the Leafs corner and carried the puck across the front of the goal before firing a backhand that Ed Belfour dove and stopped with the paddle of his stick. Lydman streaked in to fire the rebound into the top of the net.

"I saw Rhino head for the net so I was just holding back to see what happens and then it bounced out perfectly for me," Lydman said. "This is a very big win for us, we need the points."

Reinprecht finished with a goal and two assists and Iginla had three assists for Calgary (7-8-0-2), which began a six-game homestand. Dean McAmmond, the left-winger on the Flames top line had the other goal.

Mats Sundin and Bryan McCabe replied for Toronto (7-5-5-2), which remains winless four games into its longest road trip of the season (0-1-2-1). The Maple Leafs have stops in Edmonton and Vancouver before returning home.

"We have some issues right now that we need to clean up," said Toronto centre Joe Nieuwendyk, who returned to the lineup after missing seven games with an injured back. "We're not playing as a team consistently for 60 minutes and we haven't for quite some time.

"We make a lot of errors that cost us and good teams don't do that. Right now, we're playing like a mediocre team."

Calgary led 2-1 entering the third period but saw the lead slip away at 3:46 when Toronto captain Mats Sundin burst down the right wing and beat Jamie McLennan through the legs with a slapshot.

Calgary stormed back, however, and should have won the game in regulation if not for some great saves by Belfour late in the third. He stopped close-in chances by both Shean Donovan and Iginla, who had a breakaway.

"Eddie's good for us every game," Toronto right-winger Alexander Mogilny said. "If it wasn't for Eddie, we'd be in a lot of trouble. We know we can rely on him and unfortunately we didn't give him any help tonight."

A boisterous sellout crowd of 17,509 saw Calgary outshoot Toronto 26-17 in the game, including 5-0 in overtime.

With newly acquired goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff looking on from the bench, Jamie McLennan earned the win to improve to 7-5-0.

Calgary took its first lead of the night at 14:42 of the second when McAmmond scored on the power-play to put the Flames up 2-1.

Both McCabe and Tom Fitzgerald took whacks at a bouncing puck in the slot and failed to clear it before McAmmond snapped in his third goal of the year over Belfour's shoulder.

"We're a good enough team and old enough team to find ways to win even if things aren't clicking and the other team is checking well," Toronto forward Darcy Tucker said. "It's not always the big play or the home run that's going to get the job done for you."

After McCabe put Toronto ahead at 10:29 of the first, Reinprecht tied it at 14:20 to snap a stretch of 136 minutes 39 seconds since their last goal on home ice.

Notes -- Nieuwendyk's return bumped rookie C Matt Stajan to the press box . . . Calgary was without LW Martin Gelinas (ankle) and C Stephane Yelle (shoulder) who each missed their second game in a row ... Toronto C Mats Sundin played in his 700th game as a Maple Leaf  ... Iginla has no goals in eight home games.
