McCabe Powers Past Flames

Vs. CAL: Scoring | Stats

January 13, 2004

TORONTO (AP) -- Toronto defenceman Bryan McCabe is making the most of his scoring chances.

McCabe scored two power-play goals to help the Maple Leafs beat the Calgary Flames 4-1 on Tuesday night.

McCabe, who had two goals against Nashville last Tuesday night, gave Toronto a 1-0 lead in the first and a 3-1 advantage in the third. He has 26 points, two more than he had last season.

"Last year was an off year, I'll admit. It wasn't one of my best," said McCabe, who had higher expectations after finishing with 43 points two years ago. "It's good to come back with a fresh mind. I'm just having some fun."

Toronto's Tom Fitzgerald, playing his 1,000th career game, gave Toronto a 4-1 lead. Toronto's Gary Roberts also played his 1,000th game, and both were honoured in a pregame ceremony.

"The best part was having my family here," said Fitzgerald, who flipped the puck to his father after the goal. "I was thinking who am I going to give the puck to, I got four kids, but my dad was sitting right behind the bench so I tossed it to him. I don't think my kids will mind."

Toronto goalie Ed Belfour made 15 saves. Fans chanted "Eddie! Eddie!" after Belfour made a diving stop in the third.

Nik Antropov had a goal and an assist for the Maple Leafs, who lost their previous two games. Toronto leads the Eastern Conference with 59 points.

"They were juiced about their 1,000th game thing," Calgary goalie Jamie McLennan said.

Shean Donovan scored for the Flames, who played without forwards Craig Conroy, Dave Lowry, Chuck Kobasew and Blair Betts and goalies Roman Turek and Miikka Kiprusoff.

"We were pretty flat," said Calgary captain Jarome Iginla, who had 10 points and five goals in the previous four games. "It's disappointing. This is two games in a row where we haven't been energetic enough. We haven't competed hard enough."

The Maple Leafs won despite missing defencemen Ken Klee, Tomas Kaberle along with forwards Alexander Mogilny, Owen Nolan, Robert Reichel and Wade Belak.

McCabe's slap shot from the blue line gave Toronto a 1-0 lead with 26 seconds left in the first.

Donovan scored his 13th goal of the season, tying it at 1 with 33 seconds remaining in the second.

Antropov put a loose puck past sprawled goalie Jamie McLennan, giving Toronto a 2-1 lead two minutes into the third.

McCabe's one-timer made it 3-1 at 7:17, and Fitzgerald scored an unassisted goal at 16:04.

GAME NOTES: It's the first time two players have played their 1,000th games together. Roberts played his first 10 seasons in Calgary. ...
