(January 17, 2004) -- The Toronto Maple Leafs announced Saturday that they have recalled defenceman Carlo Colaiacovo from the St. John's Maple Leafs of the American Hockey League (AHL).
Colaiacovo, 20, has played 36 games for St. John's this season collecting 20 points (four goals, 16 assists) with 24 penalty minutes. He ranks first among AHL defencemen in shorthanded assists (3-tie), first in shorthanded points (3-tie) and ninth in points (tie).
In addition, he leads St. John's defencemen in assists, points and shots (89). Colaiacovo was selected to the Canadian All-Star team for the upcoming 2004 Pepsi AHL All-Star Classic.
The native of Toronto, Ontario has played two career NHL games for Toronto collecting one assist. He registered his first career NHL point (assist) in his first career NHL game October 23, 2002 vs. Phoenix. He was Toronto's first choice, 17th overall in the 2001 Entry Draft. Colaiacovo will wear sweater number 45.
