Leafs Sign Johansson
(March 9, 2004) -- John Ferguson, general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced Tuesday that the club has signed unrestricted free agent defenceman Calle Johansson for the remainder of the season. In keeping with club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Johansson, 37, played a career-high 82 games (tie) for Washington during the 2002-03 season collecting 15 points (three goals, 12 assists) with 22 penalty minutes. He is Washington's all-time leader among defencemen in assists (410) and points (529).

He led the Capitals in average ice time in back to back seasons (1999-00, 2000-01) and has led team defencemen in points on three occasions during his career (1987-88 with Buffalo, 1991-92 and 1994-95 with Washington).

Johansson set a career high in goals (15) and reached the Stanley Cup Finals with the Capitals in 1997-98. He set career highs in assists (42), points (56) and shorthanded goals (2) in 1991-92. He was named to the NHL All-Rookie Team in 1988 finishing first among NHL rookies in plus/minus (+12), second in assists (38) and eighth in points (42)

Johansson represented Sweden at the 1998 Olympics playing four games. He also played for Sweden at the 1996 World Cup collecting six points (one goal, five assists) in four games played. For his efforts he was named to the World Cup All-Star Team leading the Swedish entry to a third place finish.
The native of Goteborg, Sweden has played 1101 career games for Buffalo and Washington collecting 529 points (119 goals, 410 assists) with 519 penalty minutes. He was originally Buffalo's first choice, 14th overall in the 1985 Entry Draft.
