Leafs Sign Three Players

(May 27, 2004) --  John Ferguson, general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced Thursday that the team has signed defenceman Dominic D'Amour (pronounced Da-MOORE) of the Gatineau Olympiques (Quebec Major Junior Hockey League) and free agent blueliner Andy Wozniewski (pronounced Woz-NEW-ski) of the University of Wisconsin Badgers (NCAA's Western Collegiate Hockey Association). Forward Ben Ondrus has also signed a contract with the Maple Leafs.

In keeping with club policy, terms of the contracts were not disclosed.

D'Amour, 20, was Toronto's fourth selection, 88th overall, in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. The native of Lasalle, Quebec recorded 15 goals, and 38 assists to go along with 211 penalty minutes in 61 regular season games with Gatineau in 2003-04.

He recorded six powerplay goals and a plus-minus mark of +26. In 15 playoff games this season he collected three goals and six assists with 41 penalty minutes. He also notched an additional two goals and one assist in five games at the 2004 Memorial Cup and he played an integral role as the Olympiques advanced to the tournament final against Kelowna.

Wozniewski, 24, appeared in 43 collegiate games in 2003-04 and earned six goals and eight assists with 104 minutes in penalties. The Buffalo Grove, Illinois native was one of three Badgers' captains this season on a team that posted a record of 22-13-8 and advanced to the East Regional Final of the NCAA Tournament.

He made his minor professional debut by appearing in three games (one assist) for the St. John's Maple Leafs of the American Hockey League in April.

Ondrus, 21, played the entire 2003-04 season on an American Hockey League contract with the St. John's Maple Leafs. After sustaining a broken jaw in September, he scored six goals and added 11 assists in 60 games while accumulating 102 penalty minutes in his first season of professional hockey. The undrafted native of Sherwood Park, Alberta spent five seasons with the Swift Current Broncos of the Western Hockey League.
