Maple Leafs Re-Sign Bryan McCabe

(August 5, 2004) -- John Ferguson, general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced Thursday that the club has re-signed defenceman Bryan McCabe to a multi-year contract. In keeping with club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

"Bryan has progressed into one of the top performing defencemen in the National Hockey League," said Ferguson. "He is a versatile player who is used in all key situations and has developed into a team leader."

McCabe, 29, played 75 games for Toronto last season collecting 53 points (16 goals, 37 assists) with 86 penalty minutes. He was named to the NHL Second All-Star Team becoming the first Toronto defenceman since Borje Salming in 1979-80 to be named to one of the NHL year-end all-star teams. He also finished fourth in voting for the Norris Trophy awarded to the league's best defenceman.

McCabe ranked ninth in the NHL in average ice time (25:43), 19th in plus/minus (+22-tie), 21st in powerplay assists (18-tie) and 24th in powerplay points (26-tie). In addition, he ranked third among NHL defencemen in goals (tie), fourth in points (tie), fifth in assists and fifth in powerplay goals (tie).

The native of St. Catharines, Ontario finished first on the team in plus/minus, first in multiple assist games (6), second in assists, second in points, second in average ice time, second in powerplay assists, third in powerplay points, third in shots (168), third in multiple point games (11-tie), third in multiple goal games (3) and fourth in powerplay goals. He set career highs in assists and points while leading all team defencemen in goals, assists and points.

McCabe played all 13 playoff games for the Maple Leafs collecting eight points (three goals, five assists) with 14 penalty minutes. He ranked first during the NHL playoffs in average ice time (28:47) and 10th in powerplay goals (2-tie). He also ranked first among NHL defencemen in goals (tie) and fifth in points (tie).

McCabe has played 708 career NHL games for the New York Islanders, Vancouver, Chicago and Toronto collecting 270 points (76 goals, 194 assists) with 1262 penalty minutes. He was originally the New York Islanders' second choice, 40th overall in the 1993 Entry Draft.
