Leafs Re-sign Tellqvist and Wilm

(August 6, 2004) -- John Ferguson, general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced Thursday that the club has re-signed forward Clarke Wilm and goaltender Mikael Tellqvist. In keeping with club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Tellqvist, 24, played 11 games for Toronto last season and had a record of 5-3-2 with a 2.87 goals against average. He registered a team (tie) and season-high seven game unbeaten streak (5-0-2) from October 23 to February 21.

In addition, he started a season-high five straight games from February 19 to 26. Tellqvist also played 23 games for St. John's of the American Hockey League posting a record of 10-11-1 with a 2.68 goals against average and one shutout.

The native of Sundbyberg, Sweden has played 14 career NHL games for Toronto posting a record of 6-4-2 with a 2.86 goals against average. He has represented Sweden at the World Championships on three occasions (2000, 2001, 2003) and was selected to the 2002 Olympic team but did not see action.

Tellqvist was originally Toronto's third choice, 70th overall in the 2000 Entry Draft.

Wilm, 27, played 10 games for Toronto collecting seven penalty minutes. He made his Maple Leafs debut January 10 vs. New Jersey. He spent the majority of the season with St. John's collecting 33 points (16 goals, 17 assists) with 97 penalty minutes. He finished first on the team in game winning goals (4-tie), second in plus/minus (+5-tie) and third in shorthanded goals (2-tie).

The native of Central Butte, Saskatchewan has played 395 career NHL games for Calgary, Nashville and Toronto collecting 89 points (36 goals, 53 assists) with 293 penalty minutes. His best season came in 1990-00 with Calgary when he set career highs in goals (10-tie) and points (22).

Wilm was originally Calgary's fifth choice, 150th overall in the 1995 Entry Draft.
