Maple Leafs Re-sign Tomas Kaberle

 John Ferguson, general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced Tuesday that the club has re-signed defenceman Tomas Kaberle to a multi-year contract. In keeping with club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

"Tomas is a key component of our transition game," said Ferguson. "He is a swift skating puck mover with outstanding offensive ability."

Kaberle, 26, played 71 games for Toronto last season collecting 31 points (three goals, 28 assists) with 18 penalty minutes. He finished second on the team in plus/minus (+16), third in average ice time (23:11), fifth in multiple assist games (4-tie) and fifth in assists (tie). He also played all 13 playoff games for the Maple Leafs collecting three assists with six penalty minutes. He finished third on the team in plus/minus (+1-tie) and fourth in average ice time (20:15).

The native of Rakovnik, Czech Republic has played 443 career NHL games collecting 224 points (41 goals, 183 assists) with 110 penalty minutes. He has led team defencemen in goals and points on three occasions during his career (1999-00, 2000-01, 2002-03) and was selected to participate in his first NHL All-Star Game in 2002.

He will represent the Czech Repbulic at the upcoming World Cup of Hockey and played on the 2002 Olympic team in Salt Lake City.

Kaberle was Toronto"s 13th choice, 204th overall in the 1996 Entry Draft.
