Belfour Has Surgery
(August 26, 2004) -- John Ferguson, general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced Thursday that goaltender Ed Belfour underwent surgery on his back and is expected to make a complete recovery. The procedure was performed by Dr. Lieberman at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Ohio.
Belfour, 39, played 59 games for Toronto last season posting a record of 34-19-6 with a 2.13 goals against average and 10 shutouts.
He ranked second in the NHL in shutouts, third in wins (tie), 10th in save percentage (.918-tie) and 12th in goals against average. He also set a career high in shutouts last year. In the playoffs, he became just the 12th NHL goaltender in history to register three shutouts in one playoff series when Toronto defeated Ottawa in the Conference Quarterfinal.
Belfour ranks third in NHL history in wins (435-tie) and eighth in shutouts (75-tie).
