Leafs Announce Easter Seals Skate

(October 28, 2004) -- The Toronto Maple Leafs announced Thursday that it will host the Siemens Toronto Maple Leafs Skate for Easter Seals Kids featuring the St. John's Maple Leafs and Leafs Alumni Thursday, December 2 at Air Canada Centre.

"The Easter Seals Skate is one of our most popular community events that fans look forward to each year. As an organization, the Leafs remain committed to holding initiatives that continue to engage the community and public, while supporting worthwhile causes," said John Lashway, vice president of communications and community development at Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment. "We're pleased that we're able to make this event memorable in a unique way this year - offering fans the chance to skate with Leafs of the future and Leafs greats of the past."

For a minimum pledge of $100, fans can skate with their hockey heroes like Wendel Clark, Rick Vaive and Darryl Sittler and Leafs prospects like Oshawa native Jay Harrison and last season's top AHL rookie scorer Kyle Wellwood. There will also be plenty of incentives for fans who raise amounts in excess of $1,000.

"The Skate is an event that makes a huge difference to Easter Seals kids and their families on both an emotional level and from a quality of life perspective, said Charlotte Gibson, president and CEO, The Easter Seal Society, Ontario. "We're excited about the support were receiving from the Leafs organization and building on the success of the last Easter Seals Skate."

The Easter Seals Skate represents one of many strategic partnerships of the newly re-branded The Leafs Fund, the Leafs charitable arm. Each year The Leafs Fund raises more than a million dollars for community-based organizations that support sports, health and recreation.

Siemens Canada will serve as the event's title sponsor, along with Direct Energy, Best Buy and Mr. Sub as associate sponsors and the Toronto Sun and AM 640 as event media sponsors.

Money raised from the skate will benefit children with physical disabilities. For more information, interested participants can visit www.easterseals.org.
