Leafs, Raptors Want Torontonians To Get Physical

(June 1, 2005) -- Get Your Move On is the message that the Maple Leafs and Raptors are sending Torontonians. It's also the name of a new campaign that's aimed at promoting the benefits of incorporating physical activity into everyday life.

The Get Your Move On campaign announced Wednesday at Air Canada Centre is a public and private sector partnership between the City of Toronto and Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE), the owner of the Leafs and Raptors.

Richard Peddie, president and CEO of MLSE, was joined at the news conference by Toronto City Councillor Olivia Chow and Minister Jim Bradley of Tourism and Recreation. The three, along with Leafs greats Wendel Clark and Darryl Sittler and community leaders, later led a walk up Bay Street from Air Canada Centre to City Hall demonstrating how easy it is to stay active.

Get Your Move On's message is simple the key to creating an exciting Toronto is to have a healthy and active city.

"Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment is proud to actively support the Get Your Move On campaign. Our organization, especially the Maple Leafs and Raptors, has a long history of promoting sports, health and recreation among adults and youth through our sports development and community initiatives that's played a role in helping to create a healthy and vibrant Toronto," said Peddie.

Kellogg Canada distributed step count pedometers to participants at the event that will help encourage them to track their daily activity each day. Studies have shown that an extra 2,000 steps per day, equivalent to 20 minutes of exercise, is sufficient to prevent the average weight gain by a typical Canadian during a one year period. Other event sponsors included: Dasani and Minute Maid, who provided attendees with a healthy breakfast.
