Leafs Agree To Terms With Domi

(August 5, 2004) -- John Ferguson, general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced Friday that the club has signed unrestricted free agent forward Tie Domi to a two year contract. In keeping with club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Domi, 35, played 80 games for Toronto in 2003-04 collecting 20 points (seven goals, 13 assists) with 208 penalty minutes. He ranked sixth in the NHL in penalty minutes and led the team in the same category. He also finished second on the team in games played (tie). In 13 playoff games, he collected four points (two goals, two assists) with 41 penalty minutes. He finished first on the team during the playoffs in plus/minus (+4-tie), first in shots, first in penalty minutes and fifth in goals (tie).

The Windsor, Ontario product is currently the second longest serving member of the Maple Leafs (behind Mats Sundin) with 700 career games in a Toronto uniform. He ranks third in NHL history in penalty minutes and is the active league leader. His best season came in 2002-03 when he set career highs in goals (15) and points (29).

Domi has played 943 career NHL games for Toronto, Winnipeg and the New York Rangers collecting 229 points (99 goals, 130 assists) with 3406 penalty minutes. In 98 career NHL playoff games he has 19 points (seven goals, 12 assists) with 238 penalty minutes. He was originally Toronto's second choice, 27th overall in the 1988 Entry Draft.
