Leafs Sign Mariusz Czerkawski
(September 9, 2005) -- John Ferguson, general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced Friday that the club has signed unrestricted free agent forward Mariusz Czerkawski to a one year contract. In keeping with club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Czerkawski's best season came in 1999-00 when he set career highs in goals (35), assists (35) and points (70). For his efforts he was selected to participate in the NHL All-Star Game that year.

Czerkawski, 33, played 46 games for Djurgarden last season collecting 24 points (15 goals, nine assists) with 20 penalty minutes. He finished third on the team in goals, third in points (tie) and fifth in assists (tie).

The native of Radomsko, Poland has played 710 career NHL games for Boston, Edmonton, Montreal and the New York Islanders collecting 425 points (207 goals, 218 assists) with 264 penalty minutes. In 42 career NHL playoff games he has 15 points (seven goals, eight assists) with 18 penalty minutes. He has scored 20 or more goals on six occasions in the NHL.

Czerkawski was originally Boston's fifth choice, 106 th overall in the 1991 Entry Draft.
