Prospects Take Rookie Tournament

(September 11, 2005) -- The Toronto Maple Leafs prospects earned first place in a five team round-robin tournament held in Kanata and Ottawa this week. It is the second consecutive year that the Leaf prospects have finished on top in this tournament.

The group of 22 prospects consisting of draft picks and amateur try-outs won each of their four games against Ottawa, Montreal,Carolina and Florida.

The leading point getter for Toronto was Luke Fulghum who was signed to an amateur try-out this past summer. Fulghum had two goals and two assists. Sharing the team lead in goals with Fulghum was Dominic Noel who also had a shorthanded game-winner versus Montreal. Noel tied for second on the team with three points with Steven Later (1g, 2a). Noel is participating in the Maple Leafs' training camp as a result of being selected by the Leafs from the group of finalists in the CBC reality program Bell Making the Cut. Later was signed to an AHL contract this summer.

Leafs goaltending prospect Todd Ford had two of the four wins along with a .949 save percentage and a 1.45 goals against average. Ford was selected by the Leafs in the third round, 74th overall in the 2002 Entry Draft. Justin Pogge had the other two wins with a .962 save percentage and a 1.00 goals against average. Pogge was selected by the Leafs in the 2004 Entry Draft, 90th overall.

The Leafs prospects were coached by the Toronto Marlies coaching staff with Paul Maurice as head coach with Joe Paterson and Dallas Eakins assisting behind the bench.

The Toronto prospects return to Toronto to join the rest of the Leafs for the main training camp starting Monday with medicals and fitness testing.
