Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment Supports Hurricane Katrina Relief Efforts
(September 15, 2005) -- Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment announced Thursday that the organization will make a donation of $50,000 to Canadian Red Cross in support of relief efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The donation is among initiatives being carried out by the Toronto Maple Leafs, Toronto Raptors, Toronto Marlies, and Air Canada Centre.

""We have all been moved by the human tragedies that have occurred to our neighbours in the southern United States,"" said Richard Peddie, president and chief executive officer of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment. ""Our board of directors is joining forces with our teams, our staff members, and our fans to offer support to the remarkable efforts of the Red Cross. Our action is supported also by our continued thoughts and prayers for the people devastated by Hurricane Katrina.""

The organization has added links to Red Cross on the websites for its three teams - the Maple Leafs, Raptors, and Marlies - to enable fans visiting the team's sites to make donations directly to aid relief efforts. The Leafs and Raptors websites are among the most popular sites in the two teams"" respective leagues.

""Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment has always been a great supporter of Red Cross,"" said Gord Moore, general manager, Ontario Zone of Canadian Red Cross. ""The Red Cross relies on individual and corporate donations to enable us to bring relief quickly to those in need following a disaster. This donation will support the Red Cross in continuing to provide assistance to the more than 207,000 evacuees affected by Hurricane Katrina.""

When the Leafs open the 2005-06 NHL regular season at home against Ottawa on October 5, the club will be joining other NHL members in participating in an on-line auction of game worn jerseys. Proceeds from the auction will also go to support humanitarian efforts in the Gulf Coast region of the United States.

The NBA and its teams are committing $2 million to organizations leading relief efforts, including $1 million to Red Cross. The NBA Players Association has announced its own pledge of $1 million. The NHL and the NHL Players Association have announced a $1 million contribution.
