All\'s Looking Good for Mats
October 24, 2005

TORONTO (CP) -- Toronto Maple Leafs captain Mats Sundin has improved vision in his injured left eye and he will not require surgery, the team said Monday.

Sundin was examined by a Toronto doctor, who gave him the positive diagnosis. The six-foot-four centre will be re-evaluated early next week.

"That's where we're at right now, and that's good news,'' Leafs general manager John Ferguson. "Clearly we don't have a crystal ball but we don't expect he'll need any surgery.

"(His vision is) significantly better today than it was seven days ago.''

The six-foot-four centre was injured in the seventh minute of the season opener Oct. 5 when he was struck by a puck. His left orbital bone was fractured.

The original assessment was that Sundin would need a minimum of a month to recuperate, but Ferguson said there is still no timetable for his return.

The Leafs were 4-2-2 in his absence entering Monday night's game against the Boston Bruins.
