Maple Leafs Hire Doug Gilmour

September 18, 2006

(TORONTO) -- John Ferguson, vice-president and general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced Friday that Doug Gilmour has been named Player Development Advisor.

Gilmour will advise the Leafs management team on the prospects and players at all levels of the organization. He will also be relied upon for special assignments by both the amateur and pro scouting departments.

"Doug's passion, experience and competitiveness make him a natural fit for the Toronto Maple Leafs," said Ferguson. "This position will allow him to provide insight and analysis while developing his understanding of our hockey operations. I couldn't be more pleased to welcome him to our team."

Gilmour, 43, was a seventh-round draft choice, 134th overall by the St. Louis Blues, in the 1982 NHL Draft.  The native of Kingston, Ontario was traded to Toronto on January 2, 1992 where he played in 392 games for the Maple Leafs collecting 452 points (131 goals and 321 assists) with 386 penalty minutes from 1992 to 1997 and finished as Toronto's all-time playoff point leader. In 1,474 career NHL games spent with the Blues, Flames, Maple Leafs, Devils, Blackhawks, Sabres and Canadiens, he scored 450 goals and added 964 assists for 1,414 points. He returned to the Maple Leafs during the 2003 season playing one game before announcing his retirement on September 8, 2003.
