Leafs to Honour Veterans, Canadian Forces

(November 10, 2006) -- The Toronto Maple Leafs will honour Canada's veterans, fallen heroes and troops serving overseas during Saturday's Remembrance Day game versus the Montreal Canadiens.

All Leafs players will wear special poppies on their helmets in recognition of the evening.

Eight veterans who have served in the Armed Forces throughout Canada's history including World War II's 1st Canadian Armoured Regiment and troops who have just returned from Afghanistan will be recognized during the pregame ceremonies. A moment of silence will be observed prior to the puck drop.

Pte. Scott Townsend, accompanied by the HMCS York Colour Guard, will sing the Canadian anthem.

"On behalf of the entire Toronto Maple Leafs organization, we're honoured to recognize our heroes - the Canadian veterans and troops who served and presently serve our country," said Leafs General Manager John Ferguson. "Our lives today would have been very different had it not been for the tremendous personal sacrifices of these courageous men and women."

Fans attending the game at Air Canada Centre are encouraged to show their support by wearing poppies.

On January 13, 2007, the Leafs will host more than 100 forces on Canadian Forces Appreciation Night. The evening will recognize Canada's troops presently serving in Afghanistan with a special ceremonial puck drop and the Chief of Defence, General Rick Hillier in attendance.
