Leafs Exercise Option on Ferguson
November 22, 2006

(TORONTO) --
Richard Peddie, president and chief executive officer of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, announced Wednesday that the Toronto Maple Leafs have picked up the one-year option for 2007-08 on the contract of General Manager John Ferguson.

"We are excited about the direction the Leafs have taken, on and off the ice, under the leadership of John Ferguson," Peddie said. "When we signed John as general manager three years ago it was my hope and expectation that we'd be making this announcement today.

"Prior to the lockout John created a strategic plan that would address a number of needs that our franchise had-principally procuring and developing young talent, and operating a team under the parameters of a new collective bargaining agreement. We've begun to see the results of John's plan, and picking up the option on the fourth year of his contract enables that progress to continue."

Ferguson was named general manager of the Leafs on August 29, 2003 and at time was the youngest person in the league to hold such a position. Ferguson, now 39 years of age, is the 12th general manager in Leafs history.

"My family and I appreciate the support we continue to receive from Richard and the Leafs ownership," Ferguson said. "I've said it many times-there is no better place to win than here in Toronto. Winning on the ice, making a positive impact in our community, and making our fans proud now and in the future are what it's all about. I'm excited about the future of our organization and look forward to continuing to serve as general manager."

With Ferguson as the general manager for 186 games since the start of the 2003-04 season, the Maple Leafs have compiled 98 wins, 63 losses, 10 ties and 15 overtime/shootout losses. His .594 winning percentage is the highest of the 12 gentleman to ever carry out the role in the storied history of the Maple Leafs.

During Ferguson's tenure, the Maple Leafs have established franchise records for points (103), wins (45-tie), home wins (26) and road wins (23) in a season. His teams have reached at least 90 points and 41 wins in each of his first two full seasons with Toronto.
