Ferguson: Our Deadline Moves...

Today was a very good day for the Maple Leafs.

We made two moves. We announced a four-year contract extension for Darcy Tucker and we acquired Yanic Perreault in a trade with the Phoenix Coyotes

Darcy’s return from a foot injury will have as much impact as any trade made today.

Darcy is a unique combination. There are players who can score. Darcy had a career high 28 goals last season and he was on pace for even bigger numbers this year before his foot injury. There are players who have toughness and scoring. Not many players bring so much of both.

He has been and will continue to be a huge contributor to our team, both on and off the ice. He makes us a harder team to play against. The extension was an excellent deal for the Maple Leafs and excellent deal for Darcy. We’re thrilled to have him on hand for years to come.

The move to acquire Yanic Perreault brought us an established NHL player who can help us in several areas.

Yanic has a well-earned reputation as a top performer in the face-off circle. He has scored 19 goals this season, 12 of them at even strength.

Yanic will give us another option at forward. It will be up to Paul Maurice to determine how he will be used and with all the forwards we have out injured, Mike Peca, Kyle Wellwood, Kris Newbury and, for the short term, Darcy Tucker, another forward of Yanic’s abilities is welcome. Only a couple of years ago, we lost Owen Nolan to an injury right after the trade deadline. Injuries can come any time.

If there’s one thing that surprised me about the trades that were made over the last couple of days, it’s how many involved high draft choices.

We were able to improve our club immediately and while Brendan Bell is a quality player and person, we have kept our young core, our "A" level prospects and our first round pick.
