(May 16, 2007) -- John Ferguson, vice-president and general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced Wednesday that the club has signed defenceman Anton Stralman (STROHL-muhn) to a three-year, entry level contract.

The 6-1, 180 pound native of Tibro, Sweden, was the Toronto Maple Leafs' fifth choice, 216th overall, in the 2005 National Hockey League Entry Draft. He played with Team Sweden at the 2005 and 2006 World Junior Championships and most recently at the 2007 World Championships in Moscow, Russia, collecting two points (one goal, one assist) in nine games.  Following its conclusion, he was named one of the top three players on Team Sweden by tournament coaches.

"Anton is a top level defenceman in the Swedish Elite League whose hockey sense and puck moving ability make him a real asset," said Ferguson. "We are looking forward to having him at training camp and feel that he is well suited for the new NHL style of play."

This past season Stralman played 53 games for Timra IK of the Swedish Elite League (SEL), collecting 21 points (10 goals, 11 assists) with 34 penalty minutes. He was voted a First-Team SEL All-Star and ranked first in the league in total ice-time.

Stralman, 20, participated in the 2006 Maple Leafs Annual Prospects Camp and is scheduled to return again this year in July.
