(July 4, 2007) - John Ferguson, vice-president and general manager of the Toronto

Maple Leafs, announced Wednesday that the hockey club has signed goaltender Vesa Toskala to a contract extension that will run through the 2009-10 season.  Toskala, along with forward Mark Bell, were obtained in a trade from San Jose on June 22.

“We look forward to Vesa joining our hockey club this upcoming season,” said Ferguson.  “He has proven to be a valuable goaltender with strong statistical numbers, who will help solidify our team defensively.”

Toskala, 30, played in a career-high 38 regular season games in 2006-07 and posted a record of 26-10-1 with a 2.35 goals against average and .908 save percentage. He ranked ninth in NHL goals against average and established career-highs in wins, and shutouts (4) this past season.

In 115 career NHL games, all with San Jose, Toskala has registered a 65-28-10 record with eight career shutouts. The native of Tampere, Finland played 11 playoff games for San Jose in the 2006 NHL playoffs and posted six wins and five losses with a 2.45 goals against average with one shutout.

Toskala was originally the Sharks’ fourth choice, 90th overall, in the 1995 Entry Draft.
