Ferguson: More Competitive Balance In The Schedule Next Season

Friday, 07.12.2007 / 2:13 PM / John Ferguson Blog
By John Ferguson  - GM Toronto Maple Leaf Hockey Club
I have long been on record in wanting to bring more competitive balance to our schedule.

When just that happened at the recent general managers meetings in Palm Springs, I was delighted. The new plan does reflect many of the elements we were pushing for a year ago and comes after input from fans and partners.

We will play the Canadian teams every year and add three games out of conference that will result in a home-and-home with the Canadian teams.

One of the problems with the existing system and it has been talked about, is that fans in some cities can go so long without seeing some of the NHL’s young stars like Sidney Crosby, Alexander Ovechkin and Vincent Lecavalier.

But the plan also addresses the issue of competitive imbalance. Last year, the Philadelphia Flyers struggled but because they were in the same division, teams like Pittsburgh profited most. Pittsburgh went 8-0 against Philadelphia. We swept them as well but we played half the games. So even though we were competing in the same conference, Pittsburgh took 16 points out of their games with Philadelphia and we took eight.
