Team Blue Takes McDonald\'s Leafs Skills Competition

The 17th annual McDonald’s Toronto Maple Leafs Skills Competition presented by Rogers took place at Air Canada Centre Sunday morning. In the seven skill-challenging events, Team Blue topped Team White by a score of 12-11.

Pavel Kubina of Team Blue took home two events, winning the Pizza Pizza Hardest Shot competition and the Rogers Shooting Accuracy contest. The following is a results summary of the 2009 McDonald’s Toronto Maple Leaf Skills Competition presented by Rogers.

EVENT 1: PIZZA PIZZA GIVE AND GO PUCK CONTROL RELAY

(Race 1: Won by Team White / Race 2 – One-on-One Challenge: Won by Team Blue)

In the overall relay competition, Team White consisting of Boyd Devereaux, Ian White and Jaime Sifers defeated Team Blue’s Jeff Finger, Jonas Frogren and John Mitchell. In the one-on-one challenge, Team Blue’s Lee Stempniak edged Team White’s Matt Stajan.

EVENT 2: MCDONALD’S FASTEST SKATER

(Team: Won by Team Blue / Individual: John Mitchell, Team Blue)

John Mitchell of Team Blue completed the fastest lap of the ice in just 13.848 seconds. Team Blue also took the overall event as Jason Blake, Dominic Moore and Mitchell registered the fastest average time of 14.03 seconds.

EVENT 3: PIZZA PIZZA HARDEST SHOT

(Team: Won by Team Blue / Individual: Pavel Kubina, Team Blue)

Pavel Kubina of Team Blue posted the individual hardest shot with a blast of 103.8 mph. His teammates Jeff Finger, Lee Stempniak and Brad May helped boost the team to victory in the event, with an average speed of 95.1 mph.

EVENT 4: JUDGED SHOOTOUT

(Won by Team Blue)

Jason Blake of Team Blue became the first-ever Judged Shootout Champion as voted by the celebrity judge panel.

EVENT 5: ROGERS SHOOTING ACCURACY

(Team: Won by Team Blue / Individual: Pavel Kubina, Team Blue)

Team Blue’s Pavel Kubina, Nik Antropov and Dominic Moore hit 11 targets on 20 shots to defeat Team White’s Matt Stajan, Luke Schenn, and Alexei Ponikarovsky who were 9-for-24. Kubina and Antropov each hit four targets on six attempts to record the best individual performances. In a bonus round to determine one individual winner, Kubina edged Antropov to take home the Shooting Accuracy title.

EVENT 6: ROGERS POWER PLAY CHALLENGE

(Won by Team White)

Team White won the 3 on 1 event, with the trios of Mikhail Grabovski, Nikolai Kulemin and Boyd Devereaux, and Matt Stajan, Alexei Ponikarovsky and Jamal Mayers scoring two goals each. Team White goaltender Curtis Joseph allowed just two goals against Team Blue in the event.

EVENT 7: MCDONALD’S SURVIVOR SHOOT-OUT

(Team: Won by Team White / Individual: Alexei Ponikarovsky, Team White)

Team White outscored Team Blue 3-2 overall in the event. Alexei Ponikarovsky was the only player to score in the sudden death round and was named the individual winner.

The overall event raised $85,000 in proceeds that will help benefit the Leafs Fund and the NHLPA Goals and Dreams Fund.
