Ulmer Says History Helped Lure Gustavsson | Video: Highlights | Burke Part 1 | Burke Part 2

Brian Burke, president and general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced Tuesday that the hockey club has signed free agent goaltender Jonas Gustavsson (pronounced YOH-nuhs, GUHS-tahv-suhn) to a one-year contract.

“Jonas is considered by many to be the best goaltender not playing in the NHL today,” said Burke. “He has a unique combination of size and agility and we’re excited to add a player with his potential to our roster.”

“I want to thank Brian Burke and his staff for giving me the opportunity to play for the Toronto Maple Leafs,” said Gustavsson. “It is truly an honor and privilege and I feel very fortunate to wear the Blue and White sweater. Toronto is a great city, with tremendous fan support, and I am very excited about the future.”

Gustavsson, a 24-year-old native of Danderyd, Sweden, played this past season for Farjestads in the Swedish Elite League. In 42 regular season games, Gustavsson registered four shutouts and led the league with a 1.96 goals against average and a .932 save percentage. The 6-3, 192-pound netminder also led Farjestads to a 2008-09 Swedish Elite League Championship after allowing just 14 goals in 13 playoff games and posting a 1.03 goals against average, a .961 save percentage and five shutouts.

Internationally, Gustavsson won a bronze medal with Sweden at the 2009 World Championships in Switzerland. In five games he posted a 3-2-0 record with a 2.83 goals against average and a .914 save percentage.
