Gustavsson Has Minor Surgery To Fix Irregular Heartbeat
Update 2:00 p.m.: Rookie goalie Jonas Gustavsson underwent minor surgery, Tuesday, spending only a few hours in a Toronto hospital after undergoing a procedure called ablation.

Doctors inserted catheters into the groin muscle to dissolve an abnormality that was throwing off the rhythm of Gustavsson’s heartbeat.

Gustavsson felt dizzy Friday at the team physical after a strenuous round on the exercise bike. That incident was written off as an overtaxed system.

“We’re just lucky it happened when he was put under stress,” said coach Ron Wilson "because otherwise it can be difficult to detect.”

Gustavsson returned to the ice the day after feeling faint but doctors reviewing his case noticed the problem.

“It’s fairly common,” Wilson said. “Our doctors say they will do 10 players in a summer.”

“We don’t expect him to miss more than 48 hours.”

Signed as a free agent this summer, Gustavsson is expected to challenge incumbent Vesa Toskala for the lead role in the Leafs’ net. The six-foot-three, 24-year-old Swede fashioned a 1.96 goals against average for Farjestads in the Swedish Elite League and then a 1.03 playoff average to spark a fierce bidding war for his services.

1:31 p.m.: It sounds worse than it is, but the Monster is having a minor operation to fix an irregular heartbeat.

It’s called Ablation, and it’s a non-invasive surgery in which a catheter is used to remove a non-lethal blockage that is interrupting the heart’s normal operation.

Ron Wilson said he had the surgery today and walked in and out of the hospital.

He is expected back on the ice in 72 hours.
