Brian Burke, president and general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, made the following statement on Mats Sundin’s retirement as a player from the National Hockey League:

"The Toronto Maple Leaf Hockey Club would like to congratulate Mats Sundin on a tremendous playing career in the National Hockey League.

Mats always carried himself in an exemplary manner both on and off the ice. As captain of the Leafs for over a decade, his commitment to charitable initiatives within our community was extraordinary.

He will go down in history as one of the greatest players to ever wear the Toronto Maple Leafs sweater.

We extend our best wishes for continued success to Mats and his family.”

Sundin captained the Maple Leafs for 12 years and played in 981 career games for the blue and white, registering 420 goals, 567 assists and 987 points, along with 748 penalty minutes.  The native of Bromma, Sweden is the Leafs all-time leader in goals, points, game-winning goals (79) and overtime goals (14).  He also ranks second in career assists and sixth in games played.  He was the Leafs leader in points for 12 seasons and holds the franchise records for most 20-goal seasons (13) and 30-goal seasons (10).

The Maple Leafs acquired Sundin in a multi-player trade with Quebec on June 28, 1994.  Sundin was originally selected by Quebec, first overall, in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft.
