Rome Wasn\'t Built In A Day Leafs Fans
Points in seven straight games and boisterous returns from Phil Kessel and Jonas Gustavsson were clearly nothing to sneeze at, but Rome wasn’t built in a day.

Mike Komisarek exiting early left the Leafs with only five defenceman and overall, it was a sloppier performance from the Buds than we’ve been accustomed to seeing over the last week. The Wild are an interesting team -- no longer with Jacques Lemaire, Marian Gaborik and trying to follow an edict from Chuck Fletcher to play more crowd-pleasing, firewagon hockey. With Mikko Koivu leading the charge, they appear to have some moxie and you can’t discredit what a good story Nicklas Backstrom has been. As Ron Wilson pointed out, losses like these just means there’s more teaching tools for the charges to learn. Let’s hope the deep dish pizza doesn’t weigh them down in the Windy City.

RAPTORS

Considering the four-game road trip is looming, tonight’s game takes on a greater sense of urgency for the Raptors. The offence has been explosive, third in the league in points for per game, but sadly, the defence has been an issue -- Toronto gives up the third-most points in the league. Particularly worrisome is the club’s inability to defend the 3-ball but the upside is that’s a category where the Bulls have struggled mightily, shooting just 27 per cent from downtown.

This is a different Chi-town team than in years past and really gonna feel the void, I feel, of the departed Ben Gordon, currently pouring in 24 ppg for the Pistons. Although Derrick Rose is the type of penetrating point guard that gives the club fits, the Raptors and their freewheeling offence will square it up at .500 tonight.

OTHER STUFF ON MY MIND

- I’m on Twitter. Hallelujah. I’m fighting the urge not to be an overtweeter. Instead, I’ll become an overeater so I don’t bombard my loyal followers.

- Awesome to see Derek Jeter win his fourth gold glove. On a recent episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm, Larry grows irate with an idiot who has the temerity to call Jeter’s defence overrated. He made a career-low eight errors this season and tied the best fielding percentage of his career at age 35. Along with winning the Roberto Clemente award for matching excellence on the field with community involvement and the Hank Aaron award for being the AL’s best hitter, it’s been a bonanza for one of the biggest clutch players in sports. Who else hits .407 in the world series and doesn’t get the MVP?

- Just saw The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3. Evidently, the original title should’ve been How Denzel Just Took The Money 1 2 3. Fairly rote thriller but I liked the cast, particularly John Turturro and James Gandolfini playing the NYC mayor. Travolta hasn’t hammed it up like this since he played a fat angel in Nora Ephron’s turgid dud Michael.

- I don’t know how my Eagles lost that game to the Cowboys. I know Dallas has improved their D, but 16 points at home? And Miles Austin does nothing until the game winning touchdown. Gotta bounce back in a tough one with the Chargers.

- Just finishing up Malcolm Gladwell’s The Tipping Point. Yes, I know I’m nine years behind the times. I just hear there’s a new invention called Email too, that appears to be just fascinating. Good read from Gladwell, much more accessible than I imagined it would be and I’ll be eager to peruse his book Outliers, once of course I’m done with Andre Agassi’s revelatory Open, which I’ll be devouring shortly.
