Matt Stajan's goal with 1:47 left in the second period turned out to be the difference.

Thanks to getting the lead, the Leafs had tons of confidence and took the play to the Lightning in the third period as they outshot them 11-6. Niklas Hagman, Nikolai Kulemin and Lee Stempniak all hit the post in the third or the score could've been much more decisive.

Niklas Hagman. The Leafs forward has now scored in three straight games to take over the team goal scoring lead (11) from Alexei Ponikarovsky.

Hagman put the Leafs up 2-0 in the first period scoring while fightning off two defenders and he gave the Leafs a 3-2 lead in the second. Hagman had two goals, a plus two, six shots in 15:19 of ice-time.

Francois Beauchemin was a tower of force on the Leafs blue line against the Lightning. He played a game-high 28:36 and was matched up with the Lightning dynamic duo of Steve Stamkos and Martin St. Louis.

Beauchemin also made a great stretch pass to send Hagman in and a great diving play on Ryan Malone. His night included an assist, a plus two rating and three blocked shots.

The Maple Leafs and Lightning played a spirited, physical game that saw some big hits for both sides.

The best hit of the night was a hip-check that Garnet Exelby gave Steve Downie in the first period. In total the Lightning outhit the Leafs 17-15. Exelby and Luke Schenn were the most physical Leafs with three hits each. Ryan Malone had nine hits for Tampa Bay.

Jonas Gustavsson on the team's play in the third:

"The whole third period, I think, that was the best play we've shown so far this season when we've had the lead. We took total control of the game."
