Team White Defeated Team Blue In Leafs Skills Competition

The 18th annual Toronto Maple Leafs Skills Competition presented by Rogers took place at Air Canada Centre Sunday afternoon. In the eight skill-challenging events, Team White topped Team Blue by a score of 14-10. The following is a summary of the events:

EVENT 1: PIZZA PIZZA GIVE AND GO PUCK CONTROL RELAY
(Race 1: Won by Team Blue / Race 2 – One-on-One Challenge: Won by Team Blue)

In the overall relay competition, Team Blue consisting of Luke Schenn, Jeff Finger and Francois Beauchemin defeated Team White’s Garnet Exelby, Ian White and Tomas Kaberle. In the one-on-one challenge, Team Blue’s Mike Komisarek edged Team White’s Colton Orr.

EVENT 2: ROGERS FASTEST SKATER
(Team: Won by Team White / Individual: Nikolai Kulemin, Team White)

Nikolai Kulemin of Team White completed the fastest lap of the ice in just 14.05 seconds. Team White also took the overall event as Jason Blake, Mikhail Grabovski and Kulemin registered the fastest average time of 14.153 seconds.

EVENT 3: PIZZA PIZZA HARDEST SHOT
(Team: Won by Team Blue / Individual: Francois Beauchemin, Team Blue)

Francois Beauchemin of Team Blue posted the individual hardest shot with a blast of 102.2 mph. His teammates Jeff Finger, Alexei Ponikarovsky and Mike Komisarek helped boost the team to victory in the event, with an average speed of 97.1 mph.

EVENT 4: ROGERS SHOOTING ACCURACY
(Team: Won by Team White / Individual: Rickard Wallin, Team White)

Team White’s Niklas Hagman, Lee Stempniak and Rickard Wallin hit 10 targets on 21 shots to defeat Team Blue’s Matt Stajan, Phil Kessel, and Christian Hanson who were 7-for-21. Rickard Wallin hit four targets on five attempts to record the best individual performance.

EVENT 5: NHLPA GOALS AND DREAMS FUND FREESTYLE SHOOTOUT
(Won by Team White)

Jason Blake of Team White was voted by the celebrity judge panel as the Freestyle Shootout Champion. It was the second consecutive season Blake won the event after besting his teammates in the inaugural Freestyle Shootout last season.

EVENT 6: MLSE TEAM UP FOUNDATION GOALIE GOALS
(Won by Team White)

In this first time event, Andrew Engelage of Team White edged out Joey MacDonald of Team Blue by scoring one goal in the Goalie Goals event.

EVENT 7: NHLPA GOALS AND DREAMS FUND POWER PLAY CHALLENGE
(Won by Team White)

Team White won the 3-on-1 event, with the trios of Mikhail Grabovski, Niklas Hagman and Jason Blake scoring three goals, and Lee Stempniak, Nikolai Kulemin and Colton Orr scoring one goal. Team White goaltender Andrew Engelage allowed just two goals against Team Blue in the event.

EVENT 8: MLSE TEAM UP FOUNDATION SURVIVOR SHOOT-OUT
(Team: Won by Team White / Individual: Alexei Ponikarovsky, Team White)

Team White outscored Team Blue 3-2 overall in the event. Alexei Ponikarovsky was the only player to score in the sudden death round and was named the individual winner.
