Brian Burke, president and general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced Tuesday evening that the team has completed a three-player trade with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Maple Leafs have obtained forward Luca Caputi and defenceman Martin Skoula from the Penguins in exchange for forward Alexei Ponikarovsky.

Caputi, 21, was a fourth-round draft choice, 111th overall, in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. The Toronto, Ontario native has played in four games this season with the Penguins and has one goal and one assist. Overall, he has appeared in nine career NHL games with Pittsburgh and has three points (2g, 1a). The 6-3, 200 pound left-winger has 23 goals and 24 assists in 54 games with Wilkes-Barre of the American Hockey League this season. He was an Ontario Hockey League Second Team All-Star in 2008 when he collected 111 points (51g, 60a) for the Niagara IceDogs.

Skoula, 30, was Colorado’s second choice, 17th overall, in the 1998 Entry Draft. He is a veteran of 79 career NHL playoff games and has played for the Avalanche, Ducks, Stars, Wild, and Penguins in his 10-year career. He appeared in all 82 games plus another 23 in the post-season as the Avalanche captured the 2001 Stanley Cup. He averaged 16:43 of ice time in 33 games with the Penguins this season and notched three goals and five assists.

Ponikarovsky, 29, was second on the Maple Leafs with 19 goals, 22 assists and 41 points (tie) in 61 games in 2009-10. Playing in his ninth NHL season (all with the Leafs), Ponikarovsky sits 43th all-time on the Leafs’ All-Time Points List with 257 points. In 477 career NHL games with the Maple Leafs, the forward collected 114 goals and 143 assists.
