The Maple Leafs let the game slip away late in the second as the Islanders Frans Nielsen tipped in a goal past J.S. Giguere, making it 3-1.

It was a disheartening goal, as the Leafs started off the game strong scoring within 2 minutes of the opening stanza. The team seemed to run out of gas as the game wore on.

6:04 Islanders timeframe between Jackman and Park's goals in the first period.
0:57 Time of Nikolai Kulemin's goal in the openi.
0-7 The Leafs had zero goals with the man advantage.

The player of the game had to have been Martin Biron of the Islanders, who showcased some solid goaltending for his team, stopping 26 of 27 Leafs shots.

The Leafs had plenty of chances of getting back into the game, including a couple of loose puck scrambling situations, but couldn't get any past Biron.

Dion Phaneuf didn't get any points for the Leafs and only had one shot on goal, but he made some solid pin-point passes from the defensive zone to the speedy wingers giving them fast-break opportunities.

It was unfortunate none of the chances were rewarded with any goals, but you can see that Phaneuf is starting to get comfortable with the young Leafs team, which should pay off in the future.

The stat that sticks out is the 0-7 on the powerplay for the Maple Leafs. The failure to produce any goals with the man-advantage proved to be costly and cost them the game.

A plausible explaination for this could be fatigue, as the Leafs were coming off a game the previous night and didn't get to New York until the early hours of Sunday morning.

Leafs' head coach Ron Wilson on the team's performance against the Islanders:

“Other than the first few opening minutes, everything we did tonight was just carry-over from the second half of last night's game against Edmonton. We finished that game sloppy and it showed how we played tonight.”

Tuesday March 16 vs. Ottawa Senators
  7:30 PM ET (SNET-O, AM640)

Game Notes:
The last time the two teams met on March 6th, Phil Kessel scored the game-winning shootout goal in a very entertaining win over the Senators.

Expect more of the same as these Northeastern Division rivals battle it out on Tuesday at ACC, with the Leafs looking to put a pause on the Senators playoff hopes.
