The Senators led 1-0 after the first period but two power play goals 2:26 apart in the second period were the difference in the game.

With Luca Caputi off for elbowing, it took the Senators just 14 seconds to make it 2-0 when Sergei Gonchar wired home a one-timer. After Colton Orr took a roughing penalty, Erik Karlsson whistled home a laser over J.S. Giguere's glove hand for the 3-0 lead that held up after the Leafs scored two third period goals.

167:39 Time between goals for the Leafs.
12:30 Ice-time for Dion Phaneuf when he left the game.
7 Shots by Francois Beauchemin to lead both teams.
1-5-1 Leafs record in their last seven games.
2 Straight games that the Leafs have allowed a goal on a penalty shot.

With the Senators not doing much 5-on-5, their power play was the difference scoring two of the three goals. Gonchar and Karlsson make an excellent tandem on the point. They both have great passing ability and excellent shots.

Gonchar was the Sens' big offseason acquisition, and Karlsson is in just his second NHL season. Gonchar's goal was his first in an Ottawa uniform, while Karlsson has potted three goals already this season.

The Leafs goalless streak finally ended after 167:39. It was Nikolai Kulemin who got the Leafs on the board with his second of the season.

Kulemin was one of the few Leafs to go to the front of the net and try and screen Brian Elliott, looking for rebounds or redirects. It has been a slow start to the season but he and linemates Mikhail Grabovski and Clarke MacArthur were the best forwards on this night for the Leafs.

Coming into Tuesday's game, Phil Kessel had scored in eight straight games against the Senators and he had recorded a point in 12 consecutive games against them. That all ended in the loss.

Kessel has now gone three games without a goal as his scoring touch has cooled off since his hot start. It was the first time he has been held pointless against Ottawa since March 29, 2008 when he was a member of the Boston Bruins.

Ron Wilson on the injury to Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf:
"He's got a cut on his leg and it was deep enough that they wanted to take him to the hospital to determine the extent of the injuries and that's the last I've heard. Again, I'm not going to speculate. He probably won't be available for tomorrow (Wednesday at Washington) ... You can't replace Dion and what he brings to the team but other people have to step up in a leadership role and be vocal."

Wednesday November 3 @ Washington
7 PM ET (TSN, AM640)

Game Notes:
The Leafs play their first back-to-back of the season as they take on the high-flying Capitals.

Washington has won three of four and play the first of three straight at home. Alexander Ovechkin has seven goals on the season and he has scored in two consecutive games.
