Maple Leafs prospect Matt Frattin is in the running for the Hobey Baker Award.

Frattin, a 23-year-old senior with the North Dakota Fighting Sioux is the leading goalscorer in Division I hockey thanks to 20 goals in 23 games this season.

The Edmonton native entered the week with an eight-game goal-scoring streak.

The Leafs selected the six-foot-two 205-pound Frattin in the fourth round of the 2007 draft.

Frattin has a excellent wrist shot and is a better than average skater at the college level.

Coaches say his greatest faculty is a knack for getting open and tremendous strength in protecting the puck. Since last February, Frattin has scored 30 goals in his last 35 games.

The award will be announced on April 8.

The Fighting Sioux are unbeaten in their last 10 games (9-0-1). Their regular season ends March 5 but regional and national playoffs could push Frattin’s availability into April.

Frattin is one of 68 players nominated for the award which includes requirements for sportsmanship, integrity and educational ability.

Past winners include New York Rangers defenceman Matt Gilroy, Sabres goalie Ryan Miller and one-time Mighty Ducks star Paul Kariya.
