It was a wild third period as the teams combined for seven goals but unfortunately for the Leafs they only had three of them. The Hurricanes were up 3-1 before Tim Brent scored two straight goals to level it.

That was as close as the Leafs would get as Brandon Sutter scored his second of the period and Jeff Skinner added a power-play goal to put the 'Canes up 5-3.The Leafs would get one back but they couldn't find the equalizer as they dropped their second straight.

It looked like Cam Ward was going to steal the show but Brandon Sutter turned out to be the difference in this one as he scored two goals for the second time in a game this season.

Sutter has played well in his brief career against the Leafs. He has now potted five goals in eight games against the Leafs. Sutter has 10 goals on the season and the Hurricanes are 7-0-1 when he scores. Sutter finished the night a plus three with two shots in 15:58 of ice-time.

Tim Brent had a career-high three points in the loss. The two goals in a game was the first time he has ever accomplished that feat in the NHL. His second goal was his best as he faked the shot and with Ward down he put the puck into the wide open net.

Brent made a sweet backhand pass to Mike Brown for the power-play goal. Brent had three points, was a plus two, one hit and one blocked shot in just 10:43 of ice-time.

Special teams played a big role in the outcome in Monday's tilt. Coming into the game, the Leafs' penalty killers were playing much better of late but the Hurricanes scored two goals including the winner with the extra man.

As for the Leafs' power play, before Mike Brown's late goal, they had gone 0-7 against Carolina. The Leafs have registered just two goals in their last 24 power-play attempts.

Ron Wilson on the penalty calls in the game and the Leafs' best performers on the night:

"There were a lot of ticky-tack penalties and when you actually watch them you guess that''s the penalty they called but what can you do? We had opportunities. We got ourselves back in the game. At the end of the night our best line was our fourth-line guys and a lot of other guys really didn't get the job done."
