The Leafs once again gave up the opening goal but late in the first period Dion Phaneuf got them level heading into the intermission.

Just over half way through the second period, after some good work from Joffrey Lupul, the puck came out to Phaneuf who blasted home his second of the game. The Leafs weren't done there however as just 12 seconds later Phaneuf flipped the puck in the 'Canes' zone and Darryl Boyce centred to Tyler Bozak who tipped it home.

12 Seconds between goals for the Leafs in the second period.
9 Shots for Eric Staal in the loss.
19-0-4 Leafs' record this season when leading after two periods.
6 Points for Dion Phaneuf in four games against Carolina this season.
31 Wins for the Leafs on the season more than 2009-10.

Dion Phaneuf's strong second half continued as he had his first two-goal game and first three-point game with the Leafs. Both of his goals came on great slappers from the point.

In the last 22 games since the All-Star break, he has six goals, nine assists, 15 points and is a plus seven. He and Keith Aulie have been a formidable pairing and against the Hurricanes they were fantastic. Phaneuf was physical and blocked four shots in the win.

Coming off one of his worst performances in his young NHL career, James Reimer rebounded and was excellent in making 36 saves to pick up his 14th win after making his 13th straight start.

Reimer made a huge breakaway stop on Eric Staal in the second period when the score was tied 1-1. He also made a big stop on Chad LaRose late in the third that helped preserve the win. In his two career games against the Hurricanes he has stopped 63 of 64 shots.

15. The number of road wins for the Maple Leafs this season. While that is not amongst the best in the league, they have been much better on the road going 5-0-2 in their last seven games.

With 11 just games left in the season and seven on the road the Leafs need to keep their winning ways going for a chance at the playoffs. The Leafs have already picked up more road wins this season than they did in 2009-10. It is a huge confidence boost for a young team.

Ron Wilson on James Reimer being fatigued:

"I'm sick of hearing that... (Cam Ward) has played 63 games and he's not tired, but Reimer's supposed to be tired. If I don't play Reimer, I'm an idiot, so let's leave that rest. Reims isn't tired - he's going to have some nights where he's not as good as he is on other nights. That's like everyone in this league.''
