The Toronto chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers Association has chosen centre Tim Brent as its nominee for the 2011 Bill Masterton Trophy, awarded for ‘perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey’.

Entering the 2010-11 training camp with 19 NHL games played in the previous four seasons with three teams, Brent was determined to make the most of this chance with the Leafs, a team he grew up watching in nearby Cambridge, Ont. The 27 year old became a vital part of the club’s commitment to improved defence, assigned to check some of the top opposing forwards and helped turn around the fortunes of the penalty killing unit. His shot blocking of such noted marksmen as Alex Ovechkin and Zdeno Chara helped inspire one of the league’s youngest teams and contributed to keeping the club in playoff contention until April. Through 79 games, Brent has 20 points and a 52% faceoff percentage. Brent can often be seen making regular visits to the Hospital for Sick Children during the course of the hockey season.

Recent Masterton nominees from Toronto include Jonas Gustavsson, 2008 winner Jason Blake and Carlo Colaiacovo.

Each NHL city’s PWHA chapter nominates a Masterton candidate and the winner is chosen from a vote of the entire PHWA at the end of the season. The Masterton is part of the league’s televised awards ceremonies June 22 in Las Vegas.
