Mark Scheifele is a promising playmaker and two-way player who was able to rise above tough circumstances with the struggling Barrie Colts.
He hasn’t always had a six-foot-two inch frame to shield the puck from checkers but what hasn’t changed is his distaste for losing.
“I hate to lose. You just have to keep on being motivated and be the best player you can be and fight through it.”
Scheifele remembers competing against his older brother.
“I would start a fight or do something so the game was not officially over. It was the same. In basketball, I would kick the ball away so he couldn’t finish. Whatever it took, I would do it.”
Small wonder then that as the season wore on, scouts became more and more convinced of Scheifele’s willingness to compete. Scheifele’s stock went up from 21st to 16th from the midterm to the final ranking.
