Scott Mayfield is a wild-card, a defenceman with superb skating skills who has not yet been able to translate those gifts into meaningful numbers. Scouts must determine whether they should judge him by his meagre statistics or the size and skating ability he delivered to an oft-struggling Youngstown team.
“I definitely had some highs and lows this season," he said. “I was at the word junior under 18 challenge and had some individual success and won the MVP. That was the high point. But the low point was going on some long losing streaks."
“I definitely grew up as a person and I got bigger.”
Mayfield says he knows what it will take and understands the draft to be part of the process.
“My size and my skating ability are going to help me get to the next level,” he said. “The draft is important and it gets you recognized but you still have to make the team. I think a lot of kids forget that.”
Mayfield said his struggles brought a bright side.
“I think doing poorly shows how you can bounce back from a low point in your career or your season."
