Second Annual Shape Up Campaign Kicks Off

Thursday, 29.09.2011 / 1:59 PM / Press Releases
Players and trainers from the Toronto Maple Leafs, Toronto Raptors, Toronto FC and Toronto Marlies paid a surprise visit to students at Chester Elementary School on Thursday to officially kick off the 2011-12 Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE) Shape Up campaign. Entering its second year, MLSE Shape Up is a free program focused on using professional sports to create healthy, active living opportunities for children and youth in Grades 1-8. The program is part of MLSE’s focus on bringing educational programs into schools within the community.

In partnership with the Ontario Physical Health and Education Association (OPHEA), MLSE Shape Up provides teachers with access to online Daily Physical Activity (DPA) and Health & Physical Education (H&PE) resources such as video demonstrations, model classrooms, activity cards, circuits and missions from the Leafs, Marlies, Raptors and Toronto FC.
Participating classes are also eligible to win school visits and clinics with players, as well as a chance to attend an exclusive MLSE Shape Up event highlighting MLSE’s four teams.

“Our goal with the MLSE Shape Up program is to help address the ‘activity deficit’ we are seeing in kids today,” said Tom Anselmi, executive vice-president and chief operating officer, MLSE. “MLSE Shape Up provides teachers with hopefully a more exciting way of getting students engaged in 20 minutes of Daily Physical Activity each day and supports meeting Healthy and Physical Education requirements.”

The MLSE Shape Up program provides quality activity ideas that can be performed in a variety of venues with the backdrop of MLSE’s four teams. The program’s goal is to provide free resources that will make DPA fun and easy for both teachers and students, allowing for a consistent and quality approach to implementing and sustaining DPA.

The 2011-2012 program will consist of six (6) resource packages that will be released in three (3) phases – soccer, hockey, basketball – from September - May. Each package is comprised of:

•    One (1) sport-themed DPA fitness circuit
•    One (1) sport-themed DPA fitness mission
•    One (1) H&PE activity focusing on sport specific skills

As well as downloadable support materials including:

•    Model Classroom videos
•    Circuit station cards
•    Mission sheets; and
•    Additional video clips showing students and players from the Leafs,  Raptors and Toronto FC demonstrating various skills and activities
