Frattin Gets The Call With Connolly Out

Matt Frattin is in and Tim Connolly is out as the Maple Leafs injury wheel continues to spin in advance of tonight’s game against Florida.

Connolly, out with an undisclosed upper body injury incurred Saturday against Boston,  spoke with the media today.

“I took a cross check but I have to focus on staying positive and do what I can to get back as soon as possible. I kind of felt right away there was something wrong.”

“I’ll give it a couple of days and then get back skating.”

Connolly missed the first eight games of the regular season with an upper body injury. This one is not connected. He scored once and added three assists in six games.

The injury was particularly frustrating because the oft-injured Connolly was starting to get his wind back.

“I was starting to feel really good out there on the ice. The first few days I was a few steps behind in the game conditioning.”

With Connolly sidelined for at least another week, 23-year-old Matt Frattin has been recalled from the Toronto Marlies. Frattin was goalless in his one-game audition with the team last season and hadn’t scored in his first 11 games with the Leafs. The Edmonton native scored two goals with the Marlies this weekend.  Since Connolly is a centreman, it seemed the Leafs might opt to replace him with Joe Colborne but Colborne is nursing a minor injury so the call went to Frattin.

“I’m sure as a professional he was wondering if he was going to score,” said Leafs coach Ron Wilson. “He got two the other night so we want to build on that.”

That leaves the Leafs reconstituted third line has Matthew Lombardi between Frattin and Joey Crabb. After giving way to Ben Scrivens, Jonas Gustavsson gets the start tonight.
